There are many analytical tools that measure various parameters related to the number of backlinks leading to our website, from the quality and quantity of those links, to what our competitors are doing, and finally the number of searches for a specific keyword or phrase in Google.
What is this mysterious “number of searches on Google” all about?
The number of searches is nothing more than a keyword that people enter into the search engine when they’re looking for something. For example, if we build websites and online stores, our clients are likely to search for keywords like “website”, “cheap website”, “websites built by us”, or “online store”.
Here’s a simple example: if we specialize in building websites and online stores, our clients usually enter the following keywords into Google:
– website
– cheap website
– companies that build websites
– online store
And so on.
In short, the number of searches is simply how many times someone (not just one person) enters a specific keyword into Google every month.
What does this information give us?
The number of searches in Google allows us to assess the potential of a keyword or phrase as website owners. This is especially important for two types of ads: positioning and Google Ads campaigns.
Both types of ads are targeted at the most popular search engine, which is Google. We know that the most valuable traffic comes from these ads because they allow Google to target users who are actively searching for specific products or services right now.
Why is targeting so important?
Take Facebook as an example. People who spend a lot of time on Facebook are not in “shopping mode” and are less likely to make purchases. They’re just browsing content, and even if they do buy something, it’s usually after being heavily influenced by a strong impulse.
In contrast, users searching for specific keywords on Google are actively looking for products or services right now. That’s why targeting is so important.
The number of searches in Google (e.g., 10,000 searches per month for the keyword “Pralka Bosh XYZ”) tells us that people are searching for this product because they need it now and want to buy it. This applies not only to products but also to services.
For example, if you’re a plumber from Warsaw, the search volume for the keyword “hydraulik Warszawa” is 4,400 searches per month in Google Keyword Planner.
This means that approximately 4,400 people are searching for this service every month on Google, and they need it now. They’re likely to make a purchase soon.
With our website and this information, we can target highly motivated customers who are actively looking for products or services like ours.
Take a look at the following screenshot from Semrush:

By analyzing this data, we can learn from our competitors’ strategies and improve our own SEO and SEM efforts.
