BUILDING INTERNET WEBSITES
What is the so-called “building internet websites”? There are two schools of thought, one claims that custom-made solutions, written from scratch, are the best, while the other states that there’s no need to reinvent the wheel, as excellent CMS-based solutions already exist for building complex websites.
What is a custom-made solution? Companies on the market build their own CMSs from scratch. Unfortunately, in today’s world, building internet websites this way is not economically viable and comes with significant risks. The same problem applies to constructing an online store; the economic justification is even less convincing, unless we plan to implement it in a subscription model.
The biggest risks associated with custom-made solutions include security issues. Companies that develop these types of solutions usually employ several dozen programmers, who work on building the solution for months or years. The solution is then used as a base CMS for their clients’ websites, effectively making it an engine. The front-end is already built under the specific client’s needs.
The drawbacks of this approach can be summarized as follows: security risks, which arise from potential vulnerabilities that may not have been discovered during development, and the fact that such solutions are often sold to clients with thousands or even tens of thousands of users.
This means that if one of these users detects a bug or vulnerability, the company will need to update all their clients’ websites, which can be a significant task.
There are better solutions available on the market; I’ll ignore cost considerations for now, as custom-made solutions are significantly more expensive than using popular CMSs like WordPress. With WordPress, thousands of programmers worldwide continuously improve and expand its capabilities. Moreover, 20% of all websites in the world run on WordPress.
That’s millions of websites with a massive testing environment. Bug fixes and security patches appear very quickly due to the enormous user base. This is why building a website using WordPress as a CMS is a relatively safe solution.
Building internet websites based on WordPress is incomparably more cost-effective than custom-made solutions, not to mention that WordPress offers many more features out of the box compared to dedicated CMSs. Any change in the structure of a custom-made solution would require paying the company that developed it for additional functionality. The problem lies in being tied to one company’s services and pricing; you’re stuck with their rates until you decide to abandon the solution.
What if this company decides to double its rates? It’s not easy to get out of such a situation, especially when you’ve invested tens of thousands of zlotys into your website. You’d have to build a new solution using WordPress, which is a much more flexible and cost-effective option.
Building websites on WordPress offers security and economic benefits. Custom-made solutions can cost between 15-20 thousand zlotys. With WordPress, you can create an effective and functional website for 2-3-4 thousand zlotys, depending on how complex it is and how much custom work you require.
However, there are some projects that may cost up to 30 thousand zlotys when built using a dedicated CMS; if you want the same functionality with a custom-made solution, you’ll have to pay at least 90-100 thousand zlotys. This is because the company will need to develop custom functionality for you alone.
Therefore, in my opinion, there’s no point in reinventing the wheel when excellent base solutions like WordPress already exist, on which you can add necessary features. You can do this affordably and safely because it’s an open-source solution that’s continuously improved by thousands of programmers worldwide, with the engine being free. You only pay for customizations.
In contrast, with a custom-made solution, you pay for both the engine development and customizations.
