Adress URL
What is the address URL?
A website is actually a specific structure starting from the domain that indicates the server's IP address, through files and databases whose task is to present them in a understandable and readable way for humans. The address URL is simply the name of your internet domain – www.yourdomain.pl
For an ordinary person, this is a foreign concept, most of us, e.g. when we want to open a bank's website on our phone, enter the bank's name into the automatically opening browser and click it; or look at Google search results and usually click on the first link on the list which seems to be our bank – but more about that later…
The address URL of an internet page is such a structure as e.g. woocommercehelp.netpoint.systems/
This is a physical address in the form of a friendly user name under which somewhere in the depths of the Internet are files, databases, and our company's mailbox, etc.
Back to the topic "bank", we should never enter the bank's name into the browser and click ENTER why?
Because unfortunately, internet browsers work in such a way that they automatically start searching if you enter anything into the URL bar, this is a platform which various scammers use who disguise themselves as legitimate companies or institutions, how does this mechanism work?
Let's assume a hypothetical situation of a newly established parabank that has just launched its website and activities, we work in the usual way by entering into the browser's URL bar not the address URL of this institution but its name and clicking ENTER, what happens?
Automatically, Google search starts and displays us all the results related to the phrase we entered into the URL bar.
Google usually shows on the first place websites that are best positioned, have the highest number of high-quality links, etc. However, there are many techniques for manipulating Google search results which hackers use to steal data or directly steal money by showing us a website that looks like the institution whose website we wanted to open, and from this only one step to disaster.
We should never act in such a way as to enter into the browser's URL bar not the full address URL of a page but its name, we may make a typo even if it is a large bank with a changed letter someone can take advantage of because they have a website that is well-positioned for this search query (with an error/typo).
Always use the full address URL of a website.
If we know we want to open mBank's website, do not enter "mbank" into the browser's URL bar but type in https://mbank.pl so that the browser correctly interprets our request and instead of launching Google search, opens the bank's website immediately.
I don't understand why companies creating internet browsers, especially such a giant as Google, do not see this threat that people act in such a foolish way by entering into the browser's URL bar full addresses URLs of websites they want to open but enter the names of institutions or companies which induces automatic entry of that phrase/search query into Google search which may show us a website that looks like the institution/bank we wanted to open.
This is underestimated threat, so it's worth paying attention to this especially when it comes to financial services, never act in such a way; always enter the full address URL of a bank in this way and avoid losing money or valuable data stored on your phone or computer.
