A page on the Internet with free images is not a good idea (:
It depends on who you ask, if you ask someone who creates websites by copying and pasting from one template, they might say “from the Internet”, most often referring to so-called free stock image services like Pixabay etc. There are many such services, but others who specialize in building professional websites will point out places like Shutterstock etc., where a single image can cost 5-6 euros or more.
Exactly, it’s from here that the prices of website building services come from. One builds them for a few hundred zlotys, another for a few thousand…
Answer yourself if you can afford to pay a fine for unauthorized use of an image without a license in the amount of 50,000 zlotys (one image).
You already know what it can end up with entrusting the construction of your website to someone who chooses the lowest price…
I’m not saying that Pixabay has pirated images, but let’s be honest, how much trust can you have in people who upload photos there?
What if someone finds an illegally downloaded image on you and sues you? And the image is gone from the free stock service – how will you prove that you downloaded it in good faith from the so-called free stock?
You won’t.
Believe me, it’s better to have a paper trail, pay someone for an image, have a receipt, show it to the source and the court will not fine you for an image that you bought in good faith thinking that the stock has the right to it – the stock service will have problems, not you.
I build websites myself, website price of this website is not just my time, license for a template or some modules, but also licenses for professional and legal images. You need to be aware that one licensed image can cost up to 7-15 EUR, because the largest stock services are located outside Poland and you pay either in dollars or euros. Believe me, it’s worth paying and having peace of mind because what is even 50-60 EUR for an image on a website in relation to a fine of 50,000 EURO for one unauthorized (ONE UNAUTHORIZED) image???
This is not fantasy, these are companies specialized in pursuing these practices and they work very well. Where do I know this?
I know it from the fact that I build many websites, I’ve been working on the market since the end of the 90s and as a company since 2005 and every now and then my clients come to me with questions about image licenses because someone has accused them of having illegal images. Then I do one thing – I print out a certificate from the stock service where I bought the image for a given project, send it to the client and the court will not fine you for an image that you bought in good faith thinking that the stock has the right to it.
If I used so-called free sources of images, my clients and I would have huge problems. Believe me, it’s not worth it because today it’s no longer a joke.
My services are not among the cheapest, but neither are they among the most expensive and I often encounter attempts to file certain claims against my clients, you need to know that there is an entire industry specialized in pursuing these practices, which can be compared to reward hunters. They search for services that may have images obtained in an unauthorized way, have refined tools for scanning the Internet, so it’s a relatively simple task and they try to catch such a client, if the client doesn’t have a receipt – they have serious problems and that’s a big problem because fines for ONE image can reach 50-60 THOUSANDS OF EURO!!!
I use licensed images exclusively and every time my client has this type of problem, I show them the certificate from the stock service where I bought the image and the client has peace of mind.
